Alfred BLIND Domestic Shorthair Adult Male in Herndon, Virginia

My story
Alfred came to us with eyes in very rough shape. The best thing for him was to have his eyes removed. This happened the end of December.  His foster gives us updates on how quickly he is adjusting to being blind. Initially he was in a bathroom so he could get used to where the litterbox, food, and water were and then he was let out into a larger room supervised, so he could stretch his legs.  Each time he came out of the bathroom he was more confident of the layout of the room.  The foster would tap on the floor and speak to him so he knew where she was and he’d walk quickly to her to get chin scratches which he loves.  He now has the run of the downstairs and easily comes back to the bathroom where the litterbox is located.    Alfred is a curious, adventurous cat and started walking up the stairs so the foster put a baby gate at the bottom because she’s not sure he’d be able to get back down. He is fine with going up 2 stairs and coming back down but I’m not sure how he’d be with 8 stairs.  Alfred jumped up on the couch next to the foster but wasn’t initially able to get back down so she set up some steps so he could walk up and down with ease.  With tapping on the boxes and couch he was able to follow the vibration and sound so that he had a good repetition of how to walk up and down on his own onto the couch, which is his favorite place to hang out. His preference is to sit on a person’s lap, but is also fine sitting next to them. The one toy he seems to enjoy the most is a crinkle ball which he bats around so he must have had something similar prior to losing his sight.    Alfred meows when left alone for any length of time even with the tv on low volume, so having another pet might be good however it would need to be one that is very slow so he has time to sense them before they are next to him. Mostly he just needs attention from a human who has patience with him as he continues to adjust to being blind.    If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application and a representative will get back to you shortly to answer any questions you may have.
